2.5.3 Emergency Closing

Weather conditions or other situations may make it necessary to close the library. The authority to close the library will be at the discretion of the Director, or in the absence of the Director, the Assistant in charge.

Appropriate signs and radio/social media announcements will be made when possible.

Payment of personnel when the library closes:

Both full-time and part-time employees will be paid for a full day’s work/hours scheduled when the library closes for an emergency.

  • If the emergency extends beyond the first day, or if the decision to close the library comes before the start of the work day, employees will be paid for the missed day, unless scheduled off.

If the library is open and an employee feels he/she cannot report to work due to inclement weather, at the discretion of the Director or Assistant in charge, the employee may be:

  • Rescheduled later in the week for the missed day.

  • Docked for a day's pay for every day missed.

A full-time employee who feels he/she cannot report to work due to inclement weather may be:

  • Paid for the day using compensatory “comp” time

  • Paid for the day using vacation time

  • Unpaid

Sick leave cannot be used by an employee for time missed when the library is open during inclement weather when the employee has made the determination not to report to work due to the conditions.
