5.5.4 Bereavement Leave

Bereavement leave shall be approved by the Director or, in his absence, the Assistant in charge. Consideration shall be given to the closeness of the individual as well as scheduling.

Paid bereavement leave shall apply to regular and contract employees only.

Three days of paid bereavement leave may be used in the event of a death in an employee's immediate family. Immediate family shall be defined as parent or parental figure, mother/father in-law, grandparent, sister, brother, spouse, son, daughter, and grandchild.

Leave for all other deaths, as well as leave in excess of three days, shall be taken as vacation time, compensatory time, and/or leave without pay.

Time may be allowed when needed for the death of a relative outside the immediate family (aunt, uncle, cousin, etc.) or other persons where the closeness of relationship warrants. This time, however, shall be taken as vacation time, compensatory time, and/or leave without pay for regular and contract employees.

If the schedule permits, time may be allowed during a scheduled workday for attending funerals of individuals not defined by this policy. Such time shall be counted as vacation or compensatory time, or may be made up within the 40-hour week.
